MNDOT I-94 Project Impacts Access to CQ

SCARLET-W now available at CQ
Date: 3/14/17

The SCARLET-W fits neatly between the RAVEN and the EPIC-W with a max of 48fps using the entire frame of the 5K sensor. SCARLET-W and RAVEN share the same processor speeds internally (140MB/s), though RAVEN is limited as it has a physically smaller sensor. Both cameras can ultimately top out at 150fps at resolutions below 5K. SCARLET-W is also twice as fast as the previous SCARLET DRAGON, and is capable of 4:1 compression at 24fps, half that of the 8:1 minimum on the SCARLET DRAGON.

There's much more versatility with the SCARLET-W over RAVEN since you can change the lens mounts and the OLPF's (optical low pass filters), something that's just not possible on the RAVEN.

Now available for rental or purchase.

Here are a few tips to get to & from CQ while the Brooklyn Blvd. bridge over Hiway 100 is closed for re-decking.

From the south - You can still exit Hwy 100 at Brooklyn Blvd. & get to CQ. To go back southbound on Hwy 100 you'll need to go north on Hwy 100 to the next exit (Bass Lake Road/57th Ave N) & turn around to go south.

From the north - You have 2 choices - either exit at Bass Lake Road/57th Ave N & turn left & go to Humbolt Ave. Turn right on Humbolt & go to 49th Ave N. Turn right on 49th Ave N to CQ. Or - you can continue south on Hwy 100 to the next exit (France Ave.) Use the exit to turn around and go back north on Hwy 100 to the Brooklyn Blvd exit and turn left. Going back northbound on 100 is unchanged.

From the northwest - If you come in on 94/694, take the Hwy 81 exit (#31). Turn left on Hwy 81 to Hwy 100. Turn left on Hwy 100 to Brooklyn Blvd. Turn left on Brooklyn Blvd to 49th Ave N, then left to CQ.  To go back, go northbound on Hwy 100 to the next exit (Bass Lake Road/57th Ave N) and turn left on Bass Lake Road to Brooklyn Blvd.  Turn right on Brooklyn Blvd to 694.

From the east - Good news, you're not impacted by this bridge closure.

CQ@NAB 2014 Recap
Date: 4/18/14
Untitled 1

It’s already been over 2 weeks since NAB & we’re still digesting what we saw & learned & gathering other peoples thoughts about their experiences.  Our inboxes have certainly gotten quieter with a lot fewer press releases and announcements.  Here’s our take on this year’s show.

CAMERAS – Again this year, Blackmagic Design wowed the crowds, the press & social media by introducing 3 new cameras.  One is even shipping already(!) and the other two are supposed to ship in July (where have we heard that before?).  The first is the Studio Camera HD that has a Super 16mm sized sensor, Micro Four Thirds lens mount, a 10” monitor & no recording capabilities.  Price is only $1995 without a lens.  It’s shipping now.  The second camera is the Studio Camera 4K.  It's a camera packed in the same body as the Studio Camera HD but with a tiny bit larger Super 16 sized UHD 4K sensor & a Micro Four Thirds lens mount.  Price is $2995 without a lens.  The 3rd camera is the URSA.  This is the one that had everyone talking and/or scratching their heads.  It features a Super 35 sized UHD 4K sensor in 2 models (EF or PL mount), the Super 16 sized UHD 4K sensor from the Studio Camera 4K in a B4 mount, or no sensor and no mount if you just want to buy the camera as a 4k recording/production system.  All are recording on the pricey new CFast 2.0 compact flash media (currently about $1200 for a 120GB card) and have 3 (?) lcd screens – a fold out 10” (think of an iPad that’s attached to the operator side of the camera), a 5” on the body beneath the iPad, and another 5” on the AC side of the camera.  It’s a 12v system, but we’re not sure what the power draw will be.  It’s bigger but about the same weight as an Arri Alexa.  Prices are $5995 for the EF version & $6495 for the PL version, both shipping in July (year not specified).  The B4 & recorder only versions aren’t priced or scheduled to ship yet.  CQ is a Blackmagic Design dealer & is glad to help you work through your camera decisions.

The Arri booth was busy with the US introduction of the Amira.  Everyone wanted a chance to take a firsthand look at the camera and throw it on their shoulder to see how it felt.  The cameras on display had a firmware version much closer to what will be on the production cameras & Arri announced at the show that deliveries will commence by the end of April.  CQ has an early position in the order queue & we expect to see our first Amira pretty soon after they start shipping.  We’ll be hosting an Amira Preview event on Wednesday May 14th featuring the Amira camera for you to see if you missed NAB.  Details to follow.

Panasonic showed working versions of the 4K VariCam that was shown as a mock-up under glass in 2013.  Impressive specs and performance, but at an announced price tag ($60,000) that makes it a non-player in the production world.  We’ll see if Panasonic listens to all who told them as much.  The camera features a Super 35 sensor with 14 stops of dynamic range, an OLED viewfinder that also shows a look-around area like the Alexa or RED cameras (remember film cameras?), and a recording module that records Panasonic’s AVC-Ultra 200mbs 4K, ProRes, and other flavors of AVC-Intra or DVC-Pro HD.  The recorder can record 4K to the ExpressP2 cards (256GB & up in sizes) and to MicroP2 cards concurrently allowing 4k master recording and HD proxy recording at the same time.  Quite the time saver.

RED’s booth was bigger than last year & showcased a number of new accessories and adapters and announced that they would be selling a Scarlet DRAGON shipping sometime this summer.  Most were grumbling that they can’t ship Epic’s with DRAGON sensors that have been on order & promised for over a year.

Canon had a quiet year on the cinema camera front, but introduced the XF200/XF205 camcorder.  Great small unit that has a huge zoom range (26.8 to 576mm equivalent) and records 50Mb/s MXF to Compact Flash and/or MP4 AVCHD to SD cards.  Also features separate zoom, focus & iris rings on the lens, IR recording, built in WiFi and LAN connectivity.  Coming this summer starting at $3900.

We think the biggest surprise of the show came in the AJA booth with the announcement of the CION camera.  The AJA guys said it’s basically “every mini-converter we make duct-taped around a Ki Pro Quad with a 4K sensor thrown in.”  We think it looks much better than that.  Extremely well thought out packaging, connectivity and ergonomics – this is the camera we expected to see last year from a company like Panasonic, Sony or Canon.  Very small footprint & lightweight at only 7.4lbs, it features a PL Mount with a Super 35 true 4K sensor that will record 4K (4096x2160), UHD (3849x2160), 2K (2048x1080) or HD (1920x1080) in numerous flavors of ProRes to 512GB SSD’s.  Rumors have an EF model coming later.  If the pictures this camera makes are as great as the package combined with AJA’s reputation for legendary customer service and a price tag of $8995, we think the camera is a huge winner.  Watch for a demo event at CQ soon.

It was pretty status quo with Canon & Sony for production cameras.  They were putting emphasis on their existing products that have rolled out in the last 6 to 12 months.  GoPro's booth was just as busy as last year, but really nothing new to show except some real cool cars.

LIGHTING - We felt the stars of the show again this year in lighting were from Mole-Richardson.  Their new LED Spacelites were shown in Daylight & Tungsten versions in sizes to replace 2k & 6k tungsten versions.  The 2k replacement only draws 400 watts & the 6k replacement is only 900 watts.  Just like the proven LED fresnels, the sources are Quantum Dot remote phosphor LED’s, so the color temperature is very accurate and the CRI is above 95 in tungsten for pure color rendering.  Pricing is lower than any other LED spacelights available – the 2k replacement (LED Spacelite 2) is $2495 list and the 6k replacement (LED Spacelite 4) is $3995 list.  We’ll be testing the 6k replacement in our studio when the first production batch rolls off the line in June.

The huge influx of offshore versions of the Litepanels 1x1's were everywhere again. Given our experience with a few brands we’ve tested, we recommend sticking with the F&V K4000 on the economy side or purchasing the Litepanels 1x1’s now on sale starting at $773.  CQ stocks products from both companies.

Kino Flo introduced the Celeb 400Q, a stacked version of the Celeb 200 that puts LED's into a larger source.  We liked it much better than the double wide version.  AAdynTech showed a prototype of a new fixture smaller than a Jab that will be out this summer.  Great performance in a tiny package that we’re looking forward to seeing.

As last year, many other interesting and strange LED fixtures on the floor.  We’re still scratching our heads trying to figure out if they have a place in our world.  With the exception of Hive Lighting, plasma sources seem to have fizzled.  After about 18 months of R&D, Zacuto has announced that their PlaZma panel just wasn’t viable.

LENSES – It’s the “Year of the Servo Lenses” according to Matt Duclos & we think he’s right.  Canon joined the club & introduced the 17-120mm Cine-Servo T2.95 that will be delivering this summer with a $33,000 list price.  Available in an EF or PL mount (that can be changed to the opposite mount at a Canon service center), it’s an amazing focal length range in a package smaller than the Cabrio 19-90mm.  We think it’s a winner.  Angenieux introduced a new servo unit that will fit on all of their lightweight zoom lenses.  Interesting feature of this one is that it doesn’t have a zoom rocker(?), it’s just a compact integrated housing for focus, iris & zoom motors.  Price & delivery not announced.  Zeiss displayed a prototype servo unit that will attach to any of the 3 CZ.2 Compact Zoom lenses.  Delivery expected by the end of the year, pricing not announced.  Fujinon, the originator of the PL servo lens, added a 4th Cabrio to their lineup with the 25-300mm coming this summer.  At 20lbs, it’s not your traditional servo zoom.  Think of it used at events at the back of house for IMAG, but on a camera with a large sensor.  Yes, the Alexa has changed everything.

Anamorphic was still a buzzword at Cooke, Angenieux, and Arri /Zeiss this year.  Cooke has just started delivering the Anamorphic/i Series prime lenses that they introduced last year.  The “Cooke Look” seems to be prevailing in the anamorphic prime lens world.  For our production world, Schneider showed 3 additional lenses in the interchangeable mount Xenon FF-Prime series, a 25mm & 100mm that will ship in May/June and an 18mm that will ship later this year.  We’ve got the original set in our rental department if you want to take a closer look.  Zeiss showed all 3 versions of the Compact Zoom CZ.2 lenses.  New this year was Tokina with some intriguing low cost Cinema ATX zooms & some other prototypes that we’ll be following up on.  Speaking of lower cost, there were a couple of companies showing some re-housed photo lenses.  Both companies didn’t seem quite ready for prime time, but we’ll be keeping our eyes on them to see if they develop.

PRODUCTION TOOLS – NAB has it all, and more.  This was the year of the gimbal mount – everyone what cashing in on the Movi idea from last year.  From $299 versions for your iPhone or GoPro to something capable of 20lb cameras – they were everywhere.  We’re still exploring how viable any of them are as rental items, as the learning curve for something that has a bit of weight capacity is steeper than first believed.  If you’re good with a Steadicam, you can be good with a gimbal.  Quite a few quad-copters again this year, but the buzz was definitely lower (sorry – bad pun).  Wooden Camera had a great display of their camera accessories, including a prototype interchangeable lens mount (PL, Canon, Nikon, Leica M, BNCR, etc) conversion of a Blackmagic Camera.  It takes advantage of the different Epic/Scarlet lens mounts that are available.  Probably voids the Blackmagic warranty, but not real sure that it matters.  Pricing to be announced.  IDX featured their new compact CW-3 wireless HD system.  Proven performance now in a smaller package.  We’ll have one of these in rental soon.  $1880 & shipping now.  Teradek announced a number of wireless/streaming products that are pretty interesting.  Shipping dates to be announced.  We’re pretty intrigued by the Serv for use in our production world.  Sachtler introduced a series of Ace camera accessories to complement their Ace series of tripods.  Some look pretty good at a reasonable price.  Expect to see them at CQ when they’re released this summer.  Anton Bauer introduced a new logo & a new lithium battery system that replaces the Dionic series.  Let’s just say we liked the logo.  SmallHD previewed an upcoming firmware update for the DP7 series monitors that CQ stocks in our rental & sales departments.  It will allow real-time color grading that can be exported as a 3D LUT as well as applied to the monitor screen & the HDSDI outputs for additional on set monitors.  In a similar vein, AJA announced the LUT Box, a $695 inline mini-converter that you load 3D LUT’s into to provide color graded monitoring for those clients who want to see something more dynamic than your flat log look.  We’ve got one of these ordered for our rental department & think it will be a great tool anytime you have nervous clients on set.

Most Intriguing – The continued buzz about Blackmagic Design

Most Surprising – The AJA CION camera was it for us.  Looking forward to testing it.

Most Notable Absence – Anything 3D

Canon C100/C300/C500 Firmware Updates
Date: 4/3/13

Canon has just announced some upcoming firmware updates for the C100, C300 and C500 cameras. The good news is the firmware for the EOS C300 adds Push Auto Iris and One-Shot Autofocus (AF), both much requested by C300 owners. The C300 firmware also allows for a 1440×1080 pixel recording mode at 35Mbps. This allows the camera greater versatility in broadcast settings where this format is popular. Also new in the firmware for all cameras is the ability to move the magnified area during Magnified Focus Assist, which will be useful in judging focus on subjects that are outside the center of the frame.

AAdynTech JAB Daylite LED Kits
Date: 12/26/12

The JAB Daylight is the little brother to the ECO Punch Plus. It's output is just a bit less as an 800w Joker, but the light is a bit more even. All this from only 1.77 amps, or about 187 watts.
4G LTE WiFi Routers
Date: 1/5/13

We just added 2 of these to our rental department. Within the Verizon coverage area, the Cradlepoint MBR1000 becomes a roving 4G Wi-Fi hotspot allowing up to 64 wireless devices access to the internet at wireless-N speeds. Full Ethernet LAN connectivity with 4 LAN ports allows you to set up desktop machines, network drives, and even networked printers for ultimate flexibility when you're on location.

CQ 2013 Holiday Hours
Date: 2013

As we approach Thanksgiving, all of us at CQ wish to extend our best wishes to you for a great holiday season. We appreciate your business & look forward to continue providing our gear to your vision in the years to come.

Here's a reminder about our 2013 holiday schedule.

Thursday 11/28 & Friday 11/29 closed for Thanksgiving.
Tuesday 12/24 & Wednesday 12/25 closed for Christmas.
Wednesday 1/1/14 closed for New Year's day.

Tax Benefits for 2013 Equipment Purchases
Date: Before 12/31/13

Start planning now for your gear needs for 2014 & beyond. The IRS offers a significant tax benefit for gear purchased, leased or financed by December 31, 2013.

Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows companies to accelerate depreciation on equipment in the year it was purchased, up to $500,000. After $500,000, you are eligible for a 50% Bonus Depreciation Deduction (on the remaining amount after $500,000). Using this allowance, you can deduct the purchase price of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment or accessories purchased at Cinequipt from your gross income. This will result in a lower taxable income and a substantial boost to your company’s bottom line.

Here is an example of how this might work for you:

Sample Section 179 Savings*

$50,000 Cost of gear purchased from CQ
$50,000 Total 2013 Section 179 deduction
$17,500 Cash savings on your purchase (assuming a 35% tax bracket)

$32,500 Cost of gear after tax savings

To qualify for the Section 179 Deduction, the gear must be purchased or leased and put into service by December 31, 2013. You can take full advantage of the Section 179 tax code if you lease or finance the gear. This deduction is scheduled to be significantly reduced in 2014. You might not want to let this opportunity slip away.

*This is an example for illustrative purposes only. CQ recommends you consult your tax adviser for complete qualifications and details on your situation before your purchase.

CQ @ NAB 2013 Recap
Date: 4/15/13

Another NAB has come and gone

Another NAB has come and gone.  One vendor described the weekend after as "NAB detox" & I tend to agree.  My back, feet and brain have mostly recovered & now we're digesting what we saw and learned.

Cameras - Blackmagic Design wowed the crowds again this year by introducing 2 new cameras that they say will ship in July (seem to have heard that before).  The first is the Pocket Cinema Camera that has a Super 16mm sized sensor, Micro Four Thirds lens mount, and records in ProRes or CinemaDNG Raw.  Price is only $995 without a lens.  Sounds like the original version of the Scarlet to us, but packaged in a big "point & shoot" sized body.  The second camera is the Production Camera 4K.  It's a camera packed in the same body as the original camera, but has a Super 35mm sensor with a global shutter (but with less latitude & speed), an EF lens mount, and records ProRes or CinemaDNG Raw.  Price is $3995 without a lens.  CQ has both on order and can take your preorders as we have just become a Blackmagic Design dealer.

With the exception of those 2 cameras & one from Ikegami, it was pretty status quo with the big guys for production cameras.  Canon & Sony we putting emphasis on their existing products that have rolled out in the last 6 months.  Panasonic showed a new 2/3" broadcast camera & some others in prototype form, but still nothing large sensor.  Their booth keeps getting smaller...  Ikegami (?!) introduced the HDK-97ARRI, a camera that utilizes the sensor from the Arri Alexa that's packaged into a traditional broadcast studio camera complete with CCU & paintbox.  Think of it this way - it appears that large sensor cameras might become the norm even for traditional 3 camera sitcom style shoots.  Arri even showed an Alexa conversion that allows you to configure an Alexa for studio operation complete with fiber output and intercom.

Not to forget RED.  They were doing $8500 Dragon sensor upgrades live in their booth this year.  At least the tattoo parlor was gone.

GoPro's booth was even bigger than last year, with a second story added on one end.  Just as busy as last year too.  More & more competitors as Sony, JVC, & Panasonic have joined the offshore cloners in producing cameras to compete.  Right next door to GoPro, DJI had a booth almost as big that included a 30' x 12' diameter glass cylinder where you could test fly a Phantom Quadcopter.  They showed a great looking gimbal attachment that will be out in a few months too.  Copters were everywhere this year.  Sizes ranged from quadcopters to one that looked about 1/3 scale.  Don't forget - CQ stocks & sells GoPro's and the DJI Phantom Quadcopter.

Lighting - Stars of the show were the new LED fresnel series from Mole-Richardson.  Tweenie, Baby, or 8" Junior sizes were shown in Daylight & Tungsten versions.  The Tweenie only draws 100 watts, the Baby only 150 watts and the Junior only 200 watts.  The Tweenie & Baby versions have light outputs equal to their traditional tungsten versions.  The 8" Junior performs more like a 1500w tungsten.  The LED's are remote phosphor, so the color temperature is very accurate and the CRI is above 95 for pure colors.  Pricing is lower than any other LED fresnel available - Tweenie is $1595 list & the Baby is $1895 list.  Retrofit kits are available to convert your old fixtures too.  We've got some of the Daylight versions ordered and expect to see them later this month.

Just as last year, offshore versions of the Litepanels 1x1's were everywhere.  We saw versions from China, Korea, and Taiwan without trying.  Still nothing that really stood out in the clones.  Kino Flo introduced the Celeb 400, a double-wide version of the Celeb 200 that puts LED's into a larger source.  AAdynTech showed the JAB Hurricane, an IP65 waterproof version of the Jab, in a tank with water constantly running on it.  They also showed the ECO Space, a great looking tungsten LED spacelight.  We're going to be testing this one as it looks very good.  We've been impressed with the AAdyntech products in our rental department, and so are the customers who have bought them.

MacTech was also displaying their studio fixtures that utilize a T12 style tube that's filled with LED and drivers.  We expect to test some of these this spring as the product looked great and the manufacturer is an old friend.  Lots of other interesting and weird looking LED's on the floor too.  Still trying to figure out if they have a place in our world.  Plasma sources starting to become available, but we were disappointed in the heat output, weight & size required to achieve the same output as a 400w HMI.  Maybe next year will be better for them.

Lenses - Anamorphic, anamorphic, anamorphic sums up Cooke, Angenieux, and Arri /Zeiss lenses this year.  Cooke seems to have hit a homerun with their new Anamorphic/i Series prime lenses as they sold out the first year's production by the second day of NAB.  For our production world, a 35mm Canon Cinema Prime was announced with delivery in the 3rd quarter.  Schneider announced the Xenon-FF Primes, a new series of full frame primes with interchangeable mounts that will be shipping in the 4th quarter.  Target price is less than $4000 per lens.  Zeiss showed production versions of both Compact Zooms that looked better than last years prototypes.  Fujinon showed the 3rd member of the Cabrio family - this one's a 14-28mm T2.9 due out later this year.  All of these are available from Cinequipt.

Production Tools - Even if you can't imagine it, it's probably at NAB.  From iPhone stereo mics that turns your phone into a digital recorder to an iPhone PL Mount depth of field adapters, you'll find them there.  We're just not sure what to do if the phone rings.  Lots of offshore camera accessory manufacturers, tripod systems, and the lighting stuff we mentioned earlier.  One of the more interesting items was from Redrock Micro.  They call it the One Man Crew.  Simply put, it's a motorized slider for use in 1 or 2 camera interviews.  Their video does a great job of showing it's potential.  We've got them ordered for rental and sales.

Most Intriguing - We think the MoVI stabilizer has the potential to change hand-held shots with it's relatively quick learning curve.  Only the $15,000 price point will keep people away, buy maybe it's more of a rental item?

Most Surprising - Lack of new camera introductions.  Seems like the manufactures aren't waiting to get drowned out by NAB and are introducing cameras on their own timelines.

CQ @ NAB 2012 Recap
Date: 5/2/2012

I think it took 3-4 days for my brain to recover from the information overload we received at NAB this year. I’m sure it had nothing to do with all the after show events we felt compelled to attend. Cabbies said we were there with about 95,000 of our closest personal friends & the show floor seemed to confirm attendance was larger than last years show.

On to the show floor. 3D was around but much more subdued this year. Still seemingly a force in the feature film market & some sporting events, but not mainstream. The best quote I heard was “3D is a zero billion dollar industry”. Seems like 4K is this year’s new buzzword, but with far less hype (so far) than 3D had. As Jon Fauer noted, “…iPads and tablets, already higher rez than HD. There are a lot more forces driving 4K than just cinema.” Besides, I don’t get a headache while viewing 4k.

LED’s were everywhere. Last year’s smattering of Chinese 1x1 knockoff’s was overshadowed by what seemed like another booth with another knockoff around every corner in the Central Hall. The good news - lot’s of serious production products were there, including the Celeb 200 from KinoFlo, ETC, Philips Color Kinetics, Philips Selecon, and many more. Seems like there’s progress being made in light quality and pricing. We’re bringing some of these in for more evaluation & will let you know what we find.

Canon now has the second largest booth at NAB, & it was a busy place with a lot to see & talk about with the new 1D C & C500 announcements. We were invited to attend a 4k screening of footage shot on the C500 Sunday night and came away amazed at the beauty and clarity of the 4k images. Tell your make-up artist friends that their skills will be in demand in the world of 4k.

Lenses were big this year too. A number of new products from Zeiss in the Compact Prime & now Compact Zoom family. Pick your lens mount for the camera of your choice. The Fujinon PL 19-90 & 85-300 Cabrios, Angenieux Optimo’s with Canon EF mounts, & the new Canon EF Mount Cine Primes & Zooms. Big resurgence of interest in Anamorphic lenses too. Lots of new lenses for feeding the hungry lens port mouths of all those new cameras.

Biggest surprise at the show? Had to be the Blackmagic Design 2.5k RAW camera @$2995. We stumbled on this one first thing on Monday morning & their booth was already jam packed. Interesting to see what will come of the camera when the masses get their hands on it. We’re a bit surprised by the buzz because of the camera’s small sensor size - it’s smaller than the Micro 4/3’s in the Panasonic AF100. Maybe it’s not all about depth-of-field?

Biggest news from the show? It’s not a piece of gear, although we’re enthused about that too. We think the biggest news from NAB 2012 is that Fujinon told us they had over 220 orders for the PL 19-90 Cabrio lens. That was on Wednesday afternoon. As of May 2, they won’t confirm how many they’ve sold, but are planning to build around 500 pieces in the first production run. That’s a $38,000 ENG style PL mount lens that doesn’t really have a camera to hang it on (other than rigging up a C300 PL, F3 or RED to be handheld or putting on your weightlifting belt & hoisting up an Alexa).

Second Biggest surprise of the show? We were surprised that Sony or Panasonic hasn’t anticipated the demand for a large sensor ENG form factor camcorder. Until then, there’s always the next NAB to look forward to.
